Fablio
Solving Creation Abandonment in a Children’s Storytelling App
ROLE Product Designer DURATION 8 weeks STATUS Shipped YEAR 2024

The Problem
Kids loved trying Fablio. But they weren’t finishing. Usage was high, but completion was low. The original creation flow split character selection across four separate pages, each a dropout point. The loading screen made things worse: after kids made their choices, the app generated their story with nothing to do while they waited.

User Flows
After research sessions with the team, we identified three critical paths: free account story creation, the story limit state, and the premium conversion moment. Each had distinct friction.

Simplified Creation Flow
Instead of navigating four separate character-selection screens, I consolidated the entire flow into three focused decisions — Character, Setting, Voice — plus a review screen before commitment.
Why This Mattered
Each navigation step was a dropout point. Kids would tap through the first screen, then the second, then many left by screen three. The journey was wearing them out before they reached the creative part.

Interactive Loading
I turned a passive wait into an active creative moment.
After kids made all their choices, the app started generating the story. This took time. The original loading screen showed nothing but a small spinner on a blank purple field. Kids got bored and closed the app. I introduced a drawing canvas with a prompt and color palette, turning the wait into part of the story world.

Transparent Premium Positioning
I moved the premium decision from a mid-flow interruption to a deliberate choice at the review screen. Voice options appear as clear, equal alternatives, with the token cost visible upfront. No surprises.

Try a Story — Reducing Signup Friction
I added a “Try a Story” entry point directly on the Create Account screen, letting unauthenticated users experience a complete generated story before signing up. The result: curiosity replaces commitment pressure.

The Output
Every decision — simpler creation flow, interactive loading, transparent premium, frictionless try — was in service of one moment: a kid finishing their story.
Outcome
The redesigned creation flow shipped in late 2024. It reduced abandonment during creation, kept kids engaged through generation, improved premium adoption through transparency, and made signup feel like a natural next step.
